Officer Thomas Mathews was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious truck near Rydal. Investigation revealed that the suspect had just committed a burglary of a nearby home.
The suspect was apprehended in Virginia, returned to Pennsylvania, and sentenced to death. He was subsequently executed on May 18, 1953.
Officer Mathews had been with the agency for four years.
