Deputy Massey was shot and killed as he and two other deputies attempted to serve a warrant stemming from a domestic disturbance. When they arrived at the scene they encountered the suspect holding a .38 caliber handgun. The deputies were able to convince the man to place the gun in his belt, but the man suddenly grabbed the gun again and opened fire. Deputy Massey was fatally struck in the throat and one of the other deputies was wounded in the abdomen. The third deputy was able to return fire and killed the suspect.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 35th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. You will always be remembered and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and miss you for I know the pain and pride are forever. I am sure you are proud that your family continued your legacy of protecting and serving. The reflections left by your family and friends were touching and they are in my heart's embrace.
