Of Officer Richard Roy Marler, who perished some years previous to my birth, I am the only surviving nephew; and I am glad to see the Reflections about him. Before joining the Department of Police in Miami, Roy - as he was called in the family - had been occupied as a locomotive-engineer. I believe that he settled in Miami because he no longer wished to be the constant traveler his employment on the rails had always demanded. In and by the city of Miami, neither his name nor his sacrifice should ever be forgotten.
