Policeman John Maher was assigned to motorcycle patrol. The officer's primary responsibility was to enforce traffic rules and regulations. While attempting a traffic stop, Policeman Maher pursued a speeding motorist and struck a vehicle at the intersection of 37th Street and Michigan Avenue. Policeman Maher died as a result of the injuries he received in the accident.

Prior to 1960 or so, there was a separate Chicago police department that patrolled the city's parks and boulevards. Officer Maher was one of those officers.


Even though it has been 94 years your contribution and ultimate sacrifice has not been forgotten by the officers of the Chicago Police department.
