Patrolman Gary Maas was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call. As Patrolman Maas confronted two men, one of them opened fire at Patrolman Maas striking him. Patrolman Maas was able to return fire killing one suspect.

The second suspect was arrested a week later and convicted for first-degree murder and is now serving two consecutive life terms.

Patrolman Maas had served with the agency for six years. He was survived by his son, daughter, and expectant fiancee.
