Trooper Lukis was shot and killed while patrolling the New Jersey Turnpike in Westampton Township at 1:40 am. He had stopped to check on vehicle parked on the side of the roadway when be became engaged in a violent struggle. The suspect was able to shoot him six times in the back of the head, killing him.

Trooper Lukis had served with the agency for 4 years. He was survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters.
