Patrolman Long succumbed to injuries sustained the night before when he was struck by a drunk driver during a traffic stop on Highway 301 in Harnett County.

The 32-year-old driver was charged with hit-and-run driving and manslaughter. He was convicted of hit and run driving and sentenced to three to five years in prison.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 52nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service to my home state and the birthplace of my son. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
