I first met Lonnie Miller Sr. when I worked as an ASA for Ed Austin in 1981. My first impression was, who is this big intimidating black man with the eye patch .....I would hate to meet him in a dark alley one night. However, I soon got to know him as being someone who I would want to be with no matter the location no matter the circumstances. He was an excellent Detective who brought you well made cases but he was more than just a good police officer. He was one of the warmest, loving and caring people I’ve ever known. Quick to laugh he made an favorable impression on anyone whose path he crossed. I think even the people who he put in jail couldn’t help but like him.
In this day and time where the media and others are so quick to condemn those who protect and serve it angers me to the point where I want to get in their faces and shout, “yeah so how about Lonnie!” Don’t forget about officers like him and their families. I refrain from doing so mainly because that’s not what Lonnie would want!
In closing it has been way too long that his killing has gone unsolved. I know it must tear at the heart of his friends and family. To Lonnie JR. and the rest of the Miller family please know there are still those of us who still care and miss your father to this day.
