Deputy Lockwood was shot and killed during an escape attempt from the Grant County Jail. As he opened the cell door of a prisoner he was shot in the head by a second prisoner. The suspect was able to obtain a gun from the jail office because the prisoner was not normally confined to a cell.

The suspect was arrested, convicted of the murder, and later hung.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the one hundred and twenty-first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.
