Inspector Lobdell was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspected illegal immigrant near Roseau, Minnesota. He was shot as he attempted to place the suspect in his patrol car for transport to jail. The suspect was apprehended the following day and sentenced to life in prison for Inspector Lobdell's murder. However, the suspect escaped from prison in 1965 was never recaptured.

Inspector Lobdell had been with the agency for six months. He was survived by his wife.
