Captain Lipari was shot and killed when he attempted to stop a gunman while off duty. Captain Lipari was eating dinner with his wife and several other officers in a club. A gunman entered the club with a shotgun and opened fire. Captain Lipari immediately took action but was shot and killed. Twenty-four other people were shot and wounded in the incident.

The suspect in the case was found incompetent to stand trial and committed to a state hospital.

Captain Lipari was survived by his wife and six children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 35th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Laslater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
