Corporal John Novabilski was shot and killed while moonlighting at a liquor store at approximately 2:30 am. He was sitting in his patrol car when he was ambushed and shot 11 times, in a completely unprovoked attack. The suspect then stole Corporal Novabilski's service weapon.

The weapon was later used to murder FBI Special Agent William Christian in the same type of ambush style attack on May 29, 1995. After shooting Agent Christian the suspect was shot and killed by other agents on the scene.

Corporal Novabilski had served with the Prince George's County Police Department for 4 years and he had previously served with the Baltimore Police Department for 3 years. He was survived by his wife, parents, and brother.

I was in the police academy (Session 84) the night you were killed. CPL. Berry Beam called the class in the early morning hours. I never will forget him saying, I need you to come in. A policeman has been killed...We conducted three crime scene searches. I have been told that you were one hell of a good policeman. I wish I had got to know you. Take comfort in knowning that the dirt bag that cowardly ambushed you, killed himself with your pistol...
