Trooper Lindberg was shot and killed while off duty while investigating a robbery at his apartment complex. One of the other tenants contacted him and told him there was a robbery in progress in the manager's office. Armed with his off duty weapon he approached the office. As the suspects attempted to flee one of them shot him.

Both suspects were apprehended and sentenced to life on Febuary 4, 1970. One of them died in prison on Febuary 16, 1983.

Ttooper Lindberg was survived by his wife and child.
