Officer Libolt and Officer Dave Ketchum were killed when their helicopter was involved in a midair collision with the Newport Beach Police Department's helicopter while they were giving air support to a vehicle pursuit. The Costa Mesa helicopter's rotor blade sheered off, causing the aircraft to fall from the sky. Newport Beach's helicopter was able to make an emergency landing.

From the days we were together in the Academy until you both were taken from us. You both made a huge contribution to all who worked with you. To work with two great men/COPS, was an honor and a privilege. I think of you both often and have tears run down my cheek. My thoughts and prayers go out to your families, asking only that they comforted.
