Police Officer Robert Lee was shot and killed when he and his partner interrupted a robbery in progress at a local service station.

The two officers were transporting a juvenile prisoner at the time. When the suspect inside saw the officers he ran out and fire a round which struck Officer Lee in the head. Officer Lee's partner, Officer Daryl Shirley, was able to fatally shoot the suspect during a foot chase.

Officer Shirley was shot and killed in the line of duty in an unrelated case on April 28th, 1982.

Officer Lee had served with the Houston Police Department for just over two years. He was survived by his wife, parents, brother, and two sisters.

I wittnessed the fall of Officer Lee. I was being transported from Pearland to Houston by Officers Lee and Shirley on a traffic warrant. I'm getting old now, but I can clearly recall the tragedy of that dark night. I wittnessed the robber aim a 45 cal auto pistal and fire killing
Officer Lee. It's my opinion he died needlessly due to the fact that he was already under assignment transporting a minor. He and his partner didn't have to take the robbery call being the other officers were allready staked out on location. It is a dark day for us all when an Officer falls and i want to extend my sincere condolances to the family of Officer Lee for their great loss.
