On July 23, 1900, three New Orleans police Officers approached a suspect who was sitting with a friend. The suspect produced a handgun and opened fire, wounding one of the officers.
The following day, a team of officers tracked the suspect to his home. When they entered the home Captain Day and Patrolman Lamb were shot and killed when the man opened fire with a .38 caliber Winchester rifle. Other officers immediately surrounded the home, however, the suspect was able to escape.
Investigators received a tip three days later that provided the address of a location where the suspect was hiding. When officers arrived at the scene the suspect shot and killed Sergeant Porteous and Corporal Lally.
