Sergeant Lacey was shot and killed when two armed men entered the tavern where he was enjoying a holiday drink with a friend to rob it. Sergeant Lacey, who was off-duty, attempted to draw his gun, but was shot and killed before he could.

The shooters accomplice was arrested soon after and plead guilty to first-degree murder. The shooter was arrested three years later and was found guilty of second-degree murder.

Sergeant Lacey had been with the agency for 14 years and was survived by his sister and four brothers. His Nephew, Sergeant Brian McDonnell was killed in the line of duty in 1970.
