Undersheriff Kumpf was shot and killed while attempting to arrest two suspects who had just robbed a store in Holly, Colorado. Authorities in Holly had called the Undersheriff and told him the men may show up at the railroad depot. Undersheriff Kumpf located the men there and questioned them. He ordered the men to walk in front of him to the County Jail and as they did so one of the men pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking Undersheriff in the chest and head. The suspect was apprehended and sentenced to life.
Undersheriff Kumpf had been with the agency for 18 years and was survived by his two children.
