Deputy Kruegel succumbed to gunshot wounds received nine days earlier while transporting a prisoner. The man produced a concealed .22 caliber and shot Deputy Kruegel twice. Deputy Kruegel was able to struggle with the man and gain control of the gun but the man fled. Deputy Kruegel succumbed to his wounds ten days later. The suspect was eventually apprehended and charged with murder after Deputy Kruegel died.
Deputy Kruegel had been with the agency as a full time deputy for four years.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 57th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
