Detective Charles C. Kraatz was killed by a berserk gunman.
Two squads arrived simultaneously at 724 East 36th Street after receiving a call that a man was firing a gun in the hallway of an apartment building.
Kraatz commanded the suspect to drop his weapon, and walked toward him. The offender began shooting, striking the detective in the right shoulder, hip and stomach.
Back up officers returned fire and killed the assailant. Records later showed the gunman was on probation for carrying a concealed weapon.
Detective Kraatz was transported to Michael Reese Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds the following day.
