Lieutenant James Kirkendall was killed in an automobile accident involving two trucks on US Route 33 near St. Johns.

Lieutenant Kirkendall was a WWII veteran and had served with the agency for 21 years. He served as the commander of the Van Wert Post at the time of the incident. He was survived by his wife and two children.
