Officer Kent was shot and killed by a man who opened fire with a rifle on him and other officers while standing atop a culm pile, (waste coal), beside his house. The other officers returned fire killing the suspect.

The suspect had called police and reported that a group of people were attempting to blow up his house. He opened fire without provocation. There was no explanation why he did.

Patrol Wagon Driver George Kent,

The circumstances of your death are horrific and makes little sense. For one to have called for assistance and to kill he who respond to help him is the work of the devil. You stood for law and you stood for order and you spilled your blood upon the plates of shale all for the safety of others. This an act of sacrifice for others and the true deed of a hero. I was born and raised among the culm dumps where you died, and the story of your death was among those stories that brought me to become a law officer in the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I swell with admiration and burst with pride in being able to honor you this day with a final salute. Well done Patrol Wagon Driver George Kent...well done.
