Officer Kempen was accidentally shot and killed by another officer following a pursuit of a stolen vehicle on the Southern State Parkway. When Officer Kempen arrived a Long Island State Parkway Police patrolman was struggling with a suspect. The officer's weapon discharged during the struggle and the round struck Officer Kempen.

Officer Kempen had served with the agency for 15 years.

Only on the job for 2 years and George was my car man. Walked a foot-post (101B) on Uniondale Ave & Jerusalem, when 7 car (107) scooped me up and raced to the scene (Meadowbrook Ave. if I'm correct), George was transported in 2 car (102) to NCMC and I never saw him again. What a terrible waste and such a shock to a young patrolman at the time. Will never forget.
