Guard John Jones was killed during an assault by an inmate at the Pontiac Correctional Center.

Guard Jones was in charge of the yard gang at the institution which housed youthful offenders. He was waiting for an inmate to change from his uniform to work clothes after the midday meal when the inmate bludgeoned Guard Jones several times to the head, face and neck with a two-foot long, two-inch pipe.

Guard Jones had served with the Illinois Department of Corrections for two years. He was survived by his wife and baby who resided in Chenoa.
