Patrolman Johnson was shot and mortally wounded as he tried to arrest a man for reckless driving near Esplanade Avenue and North Rampart Street. He died at Charity Hospital five days later.

A suspect was arrested but released due to lack of evidence. On January 16, 1941, he was shot and killed by a New Orleans police officer.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 82nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never dimishes respect, not even 82 years.
