Police Officer Duane Johnson was shot and killed by a robbery suspect in Chinatown at about 2:00 pm.

Officer Johnson and his partner had responded to the store and were let in by one of the subjects, who was posing as a store employee. When the two officers entered the men immediately opened fire, killing Officer Johnson and wounding his partner.

The shooter was apprehended and sentenced to life.

Officer Johnson was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for three years. He was survived by his wife and daughter.

I still remember the day of his funeral, how sad it was to see his pregnant wife at the grave site. I was working as a detective out of Central Detectives. I was a sad day for all of us.
