Guard Friebert Johnke died from injuries suffered the previous day when he was hit by a car while crossing Illinois Route 4 at the Log Cabin service station north of Pontiac.

Guard Johnke was struck while searching for two escaped inmates from the Pontiac Correctional Center who were later captured.

Guard Johnke had served with the Illinois Department of Corrections for three years. He was survived by his wife and two children.
