Deputy Collector Ellis Jenkins was shot and killed in New Madrid, Missouri, by a man who's son had been confronted by the officer over a violation of revenue laws.
The man fatally shot Deputy Collector Jenkins with a shotgun as he stood in the doorway of his rooming house. The suspect was arrested in connection with the murder.
Deputy Collector Jenkins was a Union Army 2nd Lieutenant who served with the 50th Missouri Infantry, Company K, during the Civil War. He also held a commission as a deputy United States Marshal at the time of his murder.
