Officer Bobby James was killed when his cruiser was forced off of the road while chasing the suspect who had just shot and killed Officer Ben Gerhart.

Officer Gerhart had stopped the suspect after observing the man and a woman throwing bottles from their car. He placed the suspect in his cruiser and returned to the vehicle to talk to the woman. The man suddenly ran back to the car and retrieved a handgun from under the seat and opened fire as Officer Gerhart drew his weapon. The suspect then stole Officer Gerhart's weapon and fled the scene.

Several officers began chasing the suspect after locating the vehicle. During the pursuit the suspect fired at the officers before forcing Officer James' cruiser off the road. The suspect fled on foot but was shot and killed in an ensuing shootout.

I was thirteen years old when I attended my first “Law Enforcement” funeral. It was the funeral of Bobby L. James. Bobby was a close friend of my dad, which made him a close friend of mine. I remember our sorrow when my dad got the telephone call that Bobby had died. Bobby’s funeral was an event that I have never forgotten.

I remember when Bobby would stop by our home and visit with us. He always had his radio with him monitoring calls for service. On occasion he would meet my dad and me for lunch or a cup of coffee on the Northeast side of Houston near our home.

In the next few months, I will be starting my thirty third year in Law Enforcement in Harris County, Houston, Texas. I can say without a doubt, Officer Bobby L. James inspired me to become a Law Enforcement Officer.

“Rest in Peace, Bobby”
