Patrolman Erwin Jackson was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer. Jackson and his partner, both Maxwell Street task force policemen, responded to a call that a man with a gun was threatening customers in the tavern at 3320 West Roosevelt Road.
The officers ordered the gunman to drop his weapon. When he refused, Officer Jackson's partner tried to wrestle the weapon from him. In the struggle, three shots were fired., two shots struck the gunman, one shot struck Officer Jackson in the chest.
Officer Jackson was transported to Cook County Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He is survied by his wife and two daughters.
