Patrolman Jesse D. Hults and his partner, Patrolman William Gallagher, died as a result of gunshot wounds they received while investigating a kidnapping. During the course of their investigation, the officers relocated to a hallway outside an apartment on the city's south side. When they demanded entry, they were met with a burst of gunfire.

The gunman who shot Officer Hults was shot and killed by another officer at the scene. Five other suspects were taken into custody at the scene.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 83rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be remembered and revered.
