Sergeant Thorne was killed when his helicopter crashed while he was searching for a two-year-old girl. After the girl was located Sergeant Thorne started returning to Salt Lake City when he radioed in a distress call and disappeared from radar. The wreckage was located three days later.

Sergeant Thorne was a Vietnam War veteran and had been with the agency for 19 years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.

Sgt. Thorne,
On today, the 21st anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just as a LEO but for our Country as well when you served in Vietnam with the USMC. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
