Lieutenant James Hughes responded to a grocery store robbery at 10 Emmett Street. He became engaged in a gun battle with the fleeing suspects at Centre Avenue and Francis Street. During the gun battle, Lieutenant Hughes was shot six times. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Passavant Hospital.

Lieutenant Hughes had served with the agency for 24 years.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
