Officer Hughes was killed when his cruiser was struck from behind by a drunk driver. He and his partner had just arrested another drunk driver and Officer Hughes was sitting in the back seat of his cruiser, which was still parked on the shoulder, with the original suspect. A pickup truck driven by the second drunk driver swerved off the road and crushed the patrol car. Officer Hughes' partner, who was standing outside of the vehicle, was struck by the patrol car and was injured. The driver of the pickup truck was charged with felony drunk driving and manslaughter.
Officer Hughes had been with the agency for 11 years.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 36th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know that both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your family and friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.
