Sergeant Frederick Hudson was shot and killed when he responded to a silent alarm at a liquor store at 1764 State Street. As he and his partner approached the store the two suspects opened fire. Sergeant Hudson and his partner, who was shot in the foot, were able to return fire and seriously wounded one of the suspects.
The 31-year-old wounded suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to 199 years. His accomplice, 23, escaped. In 1968 he was placed on the FBI's 10 most wanted list. On March, 17, 1968, he was stopped in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a traffic violation. Suspicious Milwaukee officers determined his identity from his finger prints.
