Sergeant William Huckaby was killed in a motorcycle crash while attempting to rescue three small children who had climbed onto a slow-moving freight train.

As he followed the train down the right of way next to the track, he struck a guy wire which had been strung across the roadway at Nadeau Street in the Firestone Park area. He succumbed to his injuries four days later.

Sergeant Huckaby had served with the California Highway Patrol for seven years.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 46th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I pray for solace for all those who love and miss you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Rest In Peace
