Detective Sergeant Hubbard was killed when his unmarked car struck a train in Saginaw County. He and other officers were conducting a surveillance of burglary suspects and were attempting to the follow the suspects. Due to dark and dreary weather conditions the officers lost sight of the suspects. While attempting to locate them Detective Sergeant began to cross an unmarked railroad crossing, which was blocked by trees and bushes, but struck the engine of a train as it crossed.

Other officers arrived on the scene within minutes and transported him to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
