Deputy Howard and Deputy Lloyd Heilman were killed in an aircraft accident while searching for escapees from the Mohave County Jail.

The two deputies were killed when their airplane crashed in the Cerbat Mountains during a multi-agency search for the five escapees. The fugitives were caught the next day.

Deputy Howard was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

My uncle, Deputy Don Heilman was taken as well on that day. I was a teenager and had moved away from Kingman when it happened. I was then and still am very proud of my Uncle Don, as well as his brother Bill Heilman,my father, who both served their country as well as the people of Kingman. They loved being in the military and loved being Deputies in Kingman. Don't think they make men like that much anymore.
