Deputy Sheriff Andrew Holbrook was shot and killed by two inmates during an escape attempt from the Pima County Jail.

Although mortally wounded, Deputy Holbrook was able to prevent both prisoners from escaping. One of the men was hanged on April 15th, 1884, and the other was sentenced to life in prison.

Deputy Holbrook had served with the Pima County Sheriff's Office for only four months. He was survived by his sister and brother.
