Deputy Andrew Holbrook was shot and killed by two inmates during an escape attempt from the Pima County Jail. Although mortally wounded, Deputy Holbrook was able to prevent both prisoners from escaping. One of the suspects was hanged on April 15, 1884, and the second suspect was sentenced to life.
Deputy Holbrook had been with the agency for 4 months and was survived by his sister and brother.
