Sergeant Hille was killed when a gas line exploded on Sycamore Street. He had responded to an alarm reporting that the line was leaking. While he was on the scene it exploded, throwing his body onto the roof of a nearby church on 5th Street.

Sergeant Hille was survived by his wife and four children.
