Captain Edward Hilker suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty. Hilker had been the most senior member of the department with ten years service. He had been promoted to Captain only three years prior to his death. He was a veteran of World War I, having served in the US Army.
Out of respect for Captain Hilker, five police captains from neighboring towns, as well as Scott Township's police lieutenant served as pall bearers at his funeral.
Captain Hilker had served with the agency for 10 years and was survived by his wife, two daughters, and four sons.
