Deputy William Heffernan and Deputy John Saxerud were shot and killed by a man they had arrested for drunk driving. As they took the man into the processing area of the jail the man pulled out a concealed handgun and shot them both, killing them almost instantly. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to a lengthy prison sentence.

Deputy Heffernan had previously served with the United States Navy. He was survived by his two children.

You were my first Supervisor when I reported to Training Squadron Twenty-Seven at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, TX in 1974.

I was an 18 year old Airman without a clue.

I remember the lessons you taught me and the guidance you gave me to this day.
