Major Guerry was shot and killed while making a traffic stop. He died of his wounds two days later. The suspect was arrested approximately two hours after the shooting and sentenced to death. He was executed on March 19, 2004.

Major Guerry had served with the Georgetown Police Department for 15 years. He was survived by his wife and two sons.

Major Guerry's grandfather, Berkeley County Sheriff's Department Deputy Sheriff Warren Calhoun Guerry, was also killed in the line of duty.
