Officer Clyde Hearn was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while on foot patrol on Cameron Street. He had just checked in using the radio call box and stepped into the street to flag down to passing officers. The officer did not see him and drove by. Another car then struck Officer Hearn, causing fatal injuries. The driver of the car fled the scene. The man was later identified by committed suicide by lighting himself on fire before he could be arrested.

Officer Hearn had been with the agency for almost seven years and was survived by his wife and four children.

This was my Grandfather. My mother was his second child of 4 children. I was not born when my Grandfather died, but I do remember my Grandmother. I believe she had a heart attack right after this happened and she never remarried. She did her very best for their children. I too think of my Grandfather every time an officer is killed. I wish every officer safe travels in their job and I thank them for their service.
