Officer Hamilton was shot and killed after being ambushed by a juvenile boy armed with an AR-15 rifle. The boy had just killed his father and called the police.
When Officer Hamilton and her partner arrived at the scene they observed several screaming persons at the end of a cul-de-sac. The officers parked a short distance away to devise a tactical plan, but unknowingly parked in front of the location where the suspect had setup an ambush position.
The suspect opened fire on Officer Hamilton as she retrieved a radio from the patrol car. One of the rounds passed through the patrol car's window and struck her in the armhole of her vest, killing her.
The suspect then committed suicide.
Officer Hamilton had only been out of the academy for two months. She is survived by her two children, parents, brother, sister, nieces and nephews.
