Patrolman Hay was shot and killed by a suspect he has just summonsed for dumping garbage in front of 3892 Third Avenue, the Bronx. After Patrolman Hay issued the summons, the suspect drew a revolver and fired five times, striking Patrolman Hay once in the back. Patrolman Hay was removed to Fordham Hospital where he later died from his wound.

The suspect was convicted of Patrolman Hay's murder and executed on April 26, 1923.

Patrolman Hay was assigned to the 49th Precinct.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 88th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
