Guard Roger Harty was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver near the intersection of Angelica Street and Broadway.

The incident occurred when he approached the streetcar tracks, the driver of a large vehicle ran him down. Despite there being several witnesses, no one was able to describe the vehicle and no suspects were ever apprehended.
Guard Harty was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and had been in law enforcement for 25 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.
