Patrolman Robert Harris was shot and killed when he and another officer attempted to stop a fight in a restaurant at 2405 Second Avenue.

An employee of the restaurant called the manager and told him of the fight. When the manager entered, he opened fire with a handgun, killing Patrolman Harris and wounding the other officer.

A grand jury declined to indict the manager on homicide. He was found guilty of illegal possession of a weapon and released on parole.

Patrolman Harris was assigned to the Wagner Housing Project in East Harlem.
