Sergeant Hardenbrook was shot and killed at 0320 hours after stopping a vehicle that contained a parolee and two escaped convicts from a state reformatory. During the stop the parolee opened fire with a .32 caliber handgun, striking Sergeant Hardenbrook one time in the chest. The suspects were all apprehended and the shooter was sentenced to life in prison. He was paroled in 1932.

Sergeant Hardenbrook was survived by his wife, son and daughter.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 88th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service to my home state. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I was dismayed that your murderer was paroled only ten years after he killed you. What an awful travesty of justice and revictimization of your family.
