Officer Hamilton was shot and killed while he and other officers were testing out various guns at the department's range. A farmer who live nearby was cleaning his gun and using the range's targets to adjust his sights. The farmer fired just as Officer Hamilton appeared in the range to near the target, striking him in the head. Officer Hamilton was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his wound.

Officer Hamilton had served in law enforcement for a total of 15 years and previously served as the warden for the state prison in Jackson. He was a Spanish War veteran and was survived by his wife and two daughters.

May you walk the beat in heaven with the Lord forever. Being a Warden in Jackson must not have been easy and then you go risk your life for the citzen's of Battle Creek. You are a true hero and may you never be forgotten.
